THE ACT government wants to double the number of ministers on its frontbench.

By law, the ACT executive can only consist of five members of the Legislative Assembly, including the Chief Minister.

When Greens MLA Shane Rattenbury was appointed a minister as part of his agreement to support Labor forming government after the 2012 election, one of Labor's previous ministers had to move to the backbench.

Chief Minister Katy Gallagher put legislation to the Assembly on Thursday to allow for up to nine ministers - more than the present number of government members.

She says this meets the needs of Canberra's growing community and lightens the burden of increasing ministerial workloads.

The government is also considering proposals for expanding the 17-member assembly.
