THE South Australian government has launched a $350,000 community campaign on the importance of securing the future of the nation's car industry.

Premier Jay Weatherill says the More Than Cars campaign was important because the industry was about much more than cars.

"In South Australia alone, it provides as many as 13,000 jobs and $1.2 billion to the economy," he said on Thursday.

Federal Industry Minister Ian Macfarlan on Wednesday said he won't be rushed into releasing the Productivity Commission review of the car industry, despite demands for speed from Holden and the SA government.

He said the review would not be released until next year, possibly April or May.

But Mr Weatherill on Thursday said the longer the Federal government delays, the more likely it was that Holden will leave Australia which includes its Adelaide plant at Elizabeth.

Mr Macfarlan has accused the premier of putting politics ahead of Holden's future in the lead up to the March state election.

The premier "should decide whether his interest in the Australian automotive industry is to ensure long-term sustainability and jobs, or whether his interest is only for short-term political gain in the lead up to the state election".

The premier's comments about the time frame for the review and about exports, "suggest it's the latter", the Minister said.

Mr Weatherill said the community campaign would give auto industry works and their families a voice.

"Finalising investment in the car industry is now urgent - given the industry's contribution to jobs and the economy.

"The Federal Liberal Government has announced its intention to cut $500 million from support for the car industry.

"Holden has made it clear it needs more government support, not less and has put an offer to the Federal Government.

"The State Government is willing to make a contribution, Holden workers have made a contribution - what we need now is for the Federal Government to make its commitment to securing these workers' future."
