AUSTRALIA'S first hi-tech police cars will be on the road in time for the busy Melbourne Cup long weekend.
The four BlueNet vehicles feature the first fully integrated Automatic Number Plate Recognition system, in-car video and mobile data terminal.
Exterior cameras scan number plates and alert police to unregistered vehicles, unlicensed drivers and vehicles of interest.
The cars will be based at highway patrols at Geelong, Brimbank, Shepparton and Frankston but can be used across the state.
Assistant Commissioner Robert Hill said the cars will make the roads and community safer.
